Average Joe's Nose

Chilling with Chile's Wines

Every wine this month was between $8-12. That's typical for a lot of the Chileans you'll find. You can spend more, but why? Just take the sticker off, no one will know! We looked at four of Chile's better-known regions, or "D.O.'s", which stands for Denominacion de Origen, or name of origin.

The rules for labeling Chilean wines are simple: to put the D.O. regional name on it, 75% of the grapes must be from that region. To put a grape variety on the label, 75% of the wine must be from those grapes. To put a vintage on the label, 75% of the grapes must be from that year. Easy! Note: there are no legal requirements for putting "Reserve" on the label-- it's open to interpretation by the winemaker (or the marketing people, perhaps?).

The wines this month cover 4 grapes you already know and love, which Chile does well, and 5 of Chile's wine regions you will learn to love -- Lontué, Casablanca, Chachapoal, Rapel, and Colchagua. Look for those names on the label.
